Tiles of Singapore: Kampong Gelam to Telok Ayer” is a bookbinding class inspired by the tiles of Singapore.

Three designs have been specially selected for this class with Heartistry Singapore by instructor S.T. Leng based on tile patterns found in Kampong Gelam and Telok Ayer. The designs are drawn on computer and printed on-demand on a quality paper with a soft metallic sheen. A matching paper is selected for the spine to accentuate the spirited designs on the cover.

Case binding, or hardcover binding, involves sewing signatures of paper into a book block, which is then glued to the covers made of cardboards. In this workshop, participants will learn to assemble a book block with French links and kettle stitches, apply headbands and bookmark, and prepare the endpapers that will attach the book block to the hardcover.

With the locally-inspired designs and combination of materials, participants will go home with a beautiful, one-of-a-kind journal that bear testament to their newly acquired bookbinding skills.
